Chester Ruiz
HUELGA! SALINAS 1970
Chester received a call from Cesar Chavez to come to Salinas and help organize what was to become the largest agricultural strike in the history of the United States.
Forty-nine years later Chester is now leading the Adelante Movement helping farmworkers and immigrants overcome the obstacles and challenges of achieving the Sueño Americano.

PROBLEM
The “Desmadre” of 2008-2012 resulted in 11% of Latino families in Central California to lose their homes in foreclosure. There were many causes of the crisis, with many to blame, financial institutions, regulators, credit agencies, government housing policies, and consumers, among others. Two of the major causes that impacted the Latino foreclosure rate, were the explosion of Sub-prime mortgages and the lack of safeguards for non-English speaking consumers to understand what loan products and terms they were agreeing to.
The homeownership rate in Central California for farm workers and immigrants has not recovered since the “Desmadre”
